Working With Your Hands | The Carpenter

by Caleb on October 24, 2011

Right as I was talking to my wife about wanting to get into working with my hands more over the weekends, I stumble upon this amazing short film by Greek design and art studio Deep Green Sea. They call it “the first of a series of short films regarding the art & science of professionals working with their hands.” You better believe I’ll be tuning into the rest of that series.

My grandfather worked as a carpenter for years, and I used to help him occasionally when I would go to visit. I definitely want to get more into some DIY projects as a first step back into that world. More on that later.

How was your weekend?

Very cool. Visually beautiful. The music though…I think they could have done better.

I’ve been considering classes at the Chicago School of Woodworking– looks very cool. http://www.chicagowoodworking.net/

Have you heard of the book “Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work”? Give this NY Times article from a few years ago a read by its author. Great perspective on working with your hands written by the author who also happened to have a Ph.D from Univ Chicago and runs a motorcycle mechanic shop. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/24/magazine/24labor-t.html?pagewanted=all

Yeah, I thought it was a random choice as well. But not enough that I don’t like it.

And thanks for sharing the article – definitely going to give it a read. Looks really interesting.

I think the choice of this music is because of this environment of smething important, even heroic. I’m tempted to do this job just for the mix of these cconcrete images and sound (joking but half real). I mean, the other music they could use is the emotional one, like many other videos similar to this. But with this point of view, the used one, that emotional environment it’s not fitting. So I think it’s he right choice for this concrete kind of video, what it’s not focused in human interest.

Just an opinion.

Wow, too much text.
